RaceRoom finally breaks silence: the BMW M Hybrid V8 LMDh is coming to RaceRoom. For a long time, it hung in the air, but confirmation remained out. Sim racers longing for a full-fledged Hypercar experience in RaceRoom can breathe a sigh of relief. KW Studios has finally confirmed the news: the BMW M Hybrid V8 is coming to RaceRoom Racing Experience.

The announcement not only marks the addition of a new car, but is also a clear indication of a strategic change of direction: RaceRoom wants to get serious about joining the top endurance sim racing. And it shows in everything. The first in-game screenshots have now been shared, and although no liveries are shown yet, the promise splashes off the screen.

Hypercar in RaceRoom: finally a reality

That the BMW M Hybrid V8 is coming to RaceRoom is big news. The LMDh Hypercar competes in both the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) and the North American IMSA Sportscar Championship. This makes it the first official confirmation of a modern Hypercar in RaceRoom, after a teaser of the Lamborghini SC63 LMDh appeared earlier.

Although no release date has been mentioned yet, KW Studios did announce that more information will follow during the next episode of Gridtalk on 19 June. Then, gameplay of the BMW in action will also be shown.

Specifications: what makes this Hypercar so special?

The BMW M Hybrid V8 is the result of a collaboration between BMW M Motorsport and chassis partner Dallara. The car marks BMW's return to the highest level of endurance prototype racing since the late 1990s.

Under the bonnet is an advanced twin-turbo V8, based on the P66/1 block from the BMW M4 DTM. This powerplant is mated to a seven-speed Xtrac gearbox, and is supported by a hybrid system with a 50 kW electric motor from Bosch. In total, the powertrain delivers some 640 hp of pure racing power.

Technical specifications:

  • Engine: 4.0L V8 Twin Turbo (P66/3, derived from BMW DTM engine)
  • Power: 640 hp (477 kW)
  • Gearbox: Xtrac P1359 7-speed sequential
  • Hybrid system: 50 kW MGU (Motor Generator Unit)
  • Chassis: Dallara LMDh monocoque

Racing history: from Daytona to Le Mans

The BMW M Hybrid V8 debuted in 2023 in the IMSA GTP class, where it has since scored two victories: at the 6 Hours of Watkins Glen and the Battle of the Bricks at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. In 2024, the programme was extended to the world stage: the FIA WEC.

Team WRT currently runs the BMWs in the WEC, participating in classics such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans. In doing so, the German manufacturer hopes to have another shot at overall victory, something they have not managed to achieve since 1999.

What does this mean for RaceRoom?

RaceRoom, one of the most popular and underrated sim game, has built a solid reputation in recent years with strong Touring Cars, GT3 classes and classics. But with the rise of modern endurance prototypes and the huge popularity of the Hypercar class, the lack of this top category became increasingly painful. iRacing, Automobilista 2 and Le Mans Ultimate jumped on the Hypercar train earlier.

With the arrival of the BMW M Hybrid V8 (and soon, therefore, the Lamborghini SC63), RaceRoom now looks set to catch up. More than that, it opens the door for full LMDh/Hypercar classes in future updates or competitions.

Liveries and release date: please be patient

Although the screenshots are promising, official liveries from BMW Motorsport are still missing. Whether these will be added later is not yet clear. KW Studios has said it will soon come up with additional information, presumably also on the wider Hypercar offering within RaceRoom.

About RaceRoom

RaceRoom Racing Experience saw the light of day in 2013, as the spiritual successor to the popular SimBin series. The simulator is free-to-play and available via Steam, with additional content available via the RaceRoom Store. The title is known for its accessible physics engine, excellent force feedback and competitive multiplayer racing structure.

RaceRoom focuses mainly on track racing and works closely with official racing classes, such as the WTCR and DTM. The addition of Hypercars now adds a serious endurance component. The game is surprisingly good with an incredibly wide and varied range of cars and tracks.

In conclusion

The arrival of the BMW M Hybrid V8 is more than just a new car. It is a signal to the community: RaceRoom wants to compete at the top of virtual endurance racing. For fans who have hoped for years for Hypercars to come to the platform, this is the moment when that dream becomes a reality.

More details will be revealed on 19 June, but one thing is for sure: this is the start of a new chapter for RaceRoom as well as for endurance sim racing fans worldwide. In any case, I am very excited about this development and cannot wait to get behind the wheel of this magnificent hypercar!
