The Pimax Crystal Super is seen by many as the next evolution in high-end VR. After the success of the original Crystal and the recently released Crystal Light, the sim racing community is eagerly awaiting the release date of this more powerful variant. But what do we really know about the Pimax Crystal Super? In this article, we dive into the expected specifications, rumours, release date and the impact on sim racing, among other things.

What is the Pimax Crystal Super?

The Crystal Super is the new flagship within Pimax's Crystal series. Where the Crystal Light focuses on accessibility and weight, the Crystal Super goes full-on for performance. Think wider field-of-view, improved lens options and even sharper resolutions.

Pimax clearly positions this model as a high-end VR solution for serious sim racers, flight sim enthusiasts and VR enthusiasts who want to get the most out of their hardware.

Pimax Crystal Super specifications

The official specifications of the Pimax Crystal Super have since been shared by Pimax and confirm many of the previously leaked details:

  • Resolution: Ultra-sharp 3840 x 3840 pixels per eye
  • Lenses: Glass aspherical lenses with a large sweet spot
  • Optical engine: Ultra-clear, optional - 57 PPD with 120° HFOV or 50 PPD with 135° HFOV
  • Refresh rate: Variable, 72Hz and 90Hz
  • IPD: Automatically adjustable between 58-72 mm
  • Colour range: Local dimming for vivid, realistic colours
  • Foveated Rendering: Dynamic 2.0 with eye-tracking support
  • Tracking: Inside-out tracking standard, expandable with Lighthouse faceplate
  • Audio: Interchangeable 3.5mm jack, dual-microphone
  • Controllers: Comes with two controllers

The headset is designed with modularity and performance in mind. Users can choose from different optical engines (QLED or Micro-OLED), depending on their preferences for brightness, contrast or PPD. Of particular interest to sim racers is the combination of wide FOV, high resolution and advanced eye-tracking.

Shipping:

  • 50 PPD QLED version: shipping started on 7 April, new orders will be delivered in June
  • 57 PPD QLED version: expected in Q2 2025

What do we already know about the release?

Pimax already briefly teased the Crystal Super in 2024 during their own livestreams, but many details remained vague at the time. It is now clear that the product is in an advanced stage of development, with prototypes already spotted with selected testers.

Based on previous Pimax product launches, we expect a pre-order period to precede actual shipping. We saw the same with the original Pimax Crystal and the 8K X, though we have to take into account production and shipping delays, something that has been common with this brand in the past.

Pimax Crystal Super release date: official information and rumours

In addition, there are rumours that Pimax wants to launch the headset around a major tech event, possibly CES Asia or its own Pimax Frontier update. Until then, exact details unfortunately remain out.

Update: From a source at Pimax, we have learned that the Pimax Crystal Super has gone into mass production!

What does this release mean for sim racers?

For sim racers, the Crystal Super is a promising step forward. The original Crystal was already known for its unrivalled sharpness, but had limitations in field-of-view and sweet spot.

With the Crystal Super, Pimax seems to address these issues directly. In particular, the wider FOV and improved lens options can have a huge impact on spatial visibility while racing. In sim racing, every millisecond counts, and better visual information can really make a difference - from braking to side-by-side battles in the rain.

In addition, the new eye-tracking technology ensures better performance at higher resolutions, as it only renders where your eyes focus.

What exactly does the Pimax Crystal Super cost?

Pimax has now provided more clarity on the Crystal Super's pricing. The total cost will be €1,722, composed of the following components:

  • Upfront payment: €726 EUR - you pay this amount directly when placing your order.
  • Prime Membership Fee: €41.49 per month, spread over 24 months. This membership is activated as soon as you receive the headset and you pay for it via the Pimax Play app. You can choose to pay this amount monthly, or pay it in one go.

This pricing structure is similar to a subscription model, where you get immediate access to the hardware, but pay off the remaining amount in stages through the Prime membership. Keep in mind that in some cases, this membership can also offer additional benefits, such as access to exclusive content or service.

Conclusion: is it worth the wait?

The Pimax Crystal Super is perhaps the most promising VR headset in years. Especially for sim racers, it offers a unique combination of visual quality, speed and immersion. Although many questions remain open - especially about actual availability and price - it seems that Pimax has taken serious steps to further perfect its premium VR line.

For those who need a headset now, the original Crystal or Crystal Light an excellent choice. But those who want to get the most out of their simulator and can wait a little longer would do well to keep a sharp eye on the release of the Crystal Super.

Stay tuned via SimRacingHub.nl - as soon as the official release date of the Pimax Crystal Super is known, you will be the first to know.
